Metal,
Ceramic or Composite Coatings on Metallic & Ceramic Powders
Materials Modification Inc.
has developed a patent pending process called "VaricoatTM", to
produce composite powders with a layer of metallic,
ceramic or polymeric coating on a wide range of materials.
The VaricoatTM
process involves dispersing metallic or ceramic powders in a
liquid solution, followed by a chemical reaction under a
controlled atmosphere. This results in a nanolayer
coating. The advantages of
the VaricoatTM
process are:
-
Uniform
coating of the powders,
-
Coating
thickness can be controlled,
-
Consolidated
parts exhibit improved mechanical, thermal, bio compatible and electrical
properties,
-
High
density parts can be produced with minimum matrix segregation
Applications
-
Thermal Management Substrates
-
Armor and Anti-Armor materials
-
Cutting Tools, Dies and Nozzles
-
Additives for Structural Composites
-
Biomedical Applications
-
Magnetic materials

Thermal management substrates consolidated
using copper coated molybdenum powders (VaricoatTM technique) have
higher thermal conductivity compared to copper infiltrated
molybdenum substrates of the same composition.
The VaricoatTM
technique has been successfully applied to
produce the following coated powders:
-
Copper coated on various materials
-
Nickel coated on various materials
-
Cobalt coated on various materials
-
Indium coated on various materials
-
Polyethylene on various materials
